Youth Challenge International (YCI) is recruiting a skilled volunteer for partner capacity building projects in Zanzibar Tanzania.

This exciting Youth Innovator opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive eight-week placement in Zanzibar in the fall of 2011. While in country, you will provide technical expertise to YCI’s field staff and local partner organizations to build their capacity to incorporate gender equality into their programs.

Partner Capacity Building:
Your background in human resources, gender and/or facilitation/training combined with strong intercultural communication skills will help build the capacity of our partner, ZANGOC, and the local organizations they work with. You will gain substantive experience working directly with YCI staff and partners to implement CIDA programming objectives and improve your project planning, management and implementation skills while working in an international context.

Key Responsibilities:

In conjunction with partner staff:
• Review existing policies on gender and other workplace policies for potential issues regarding gender equity.
• Develop and roll out a gender equity training based on current national policies and ZANGOC strategic plan, including any HR policies relevant to gender and leadership, code of conduct and other relevant workplace policies.
• Develop an implementation plan for ZANGOC’s Gender policy to create opportunities for emerging women leaders, including such activities as a Women’s Leadership network, with staff from ZANGOC member organizations, with the potential to expand to other professional women in Zanzibar.
• Conduct workshops in the community, with ZANGOC and member staff, on gender equity and the role of women in development.
• Complete final report to inform future groups and partner staff.

Your Skills and Experience:
• Demonstrated experience working with gender issues in a multi-cultural environment
• Experience in facilitating trainings and workshops
• Experience working with grassroots organizations
• Strong planning and organization skills
• Demonstrated report writing skills and knowledge of monitoring and evaluation
• Prior cross-cultural experience and strong inter-cultural communication skills
• Appropriate post-secondary education or relevant work experience
• Computer proficiency
• Experience working overseas

Fundraising Goal: YCI volunteers are required to fundraise and/or contribute a minimum of $500 for this project to contribute towards YCI’s global youth development programs.

What’s Covered:

• Comprehensive emergency travel medical insurance

What’s Not Covered:
• Airfare
• Personal expenses
• Visa fees
• Supplemental travel insurance
• Participants will be expected obtain the required vaccinations and take anti-malarials at their own expense
