The Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) is a youth-led network of over 6000 young leaders and adult allies working on HIV and AIDS related issues in over 150 countries. GYCA works to empower young leaders with the skills, knowledge, resources and opportunities they need to scale up HIV/AIDS interventions amongst their peers (www.youthaidscoalition.org). It’s work is guided by four priorities: Networking and sharing of best practices; technical assistance and capacity building; political advocacy; and preparation for international conferences. GYCA is a program of the Global Youth Action Network and TakingITGlobal (www.tigweb.org), with staff based in New York City and Accra, Ghana.
We are currently seeking a political advocacy intern to be based at our New York office. The internship will run from July 1 to August 15, 2009, and applicants should be available to work 3-4 days a week during this time period. The internship is unpaid.
Position overview:
The position will focus on strengthening the capacity of GYCA members to carry out political advocacy work. The Intern will be responsible for developing a toolkit based on the GYCA Political Advocacy e-course curriculum to be used for in-person trainings; s/he will also assist GYCA staff in the development of GYCA’s advocacy messages and an advocacy policy for GYCA members. Based on their experience and interest, the intern may also take on other tasks, such as assisting in the development of a toolkit on grant writing and fundraising, or helping to edit content on GYCA’s website.
The position is perfect for a dynamic, well-organized, detail-oriented individual with a passion for youth engagement, HIV and AIDS and political advocacy.
Key Criteria for Selection:
• At least two years activist, professional, and/or academic experience in HIV and AIDS, international health, and/or development;
• Experience and investment in youth leadership, empowerment, and organizing;
• Excellent written communication skills;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with online technology (e-groups, wikipedia, blogs, etc);
• Commitment to a rights-based approach including condoms, evidence-based information, and non-discrimination against any population;
• Experience in political advocacy and/or facilitating in-person trainings (not required, but prioritized);
• Work, volunteer, and/or study experience in a developing country (not required, but prioritized).
As a team member of a small non-profit, interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the network, to implement ideas that will have a significant impact on GYCA’s members worldwide, as well as to be in touch with young HIV and AIDS activists from around the world.
Application process:
If you are interested in applying, please send a cover letter and resume to Reshma Pattni, GYCA Program Manager, at reshma@youthaidscoalition.org with GYCA Internship as the subject, as soon as possible—last date to apply is Tuesday, June 23, 2009.
Please no phone calls. Only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
