About About

The Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) is one of the most expansive youth networks in the world, with more than 1,000 member organizations in over 150 countries. Our strategic partner TakingITGlobal (TIG) hosts the world’s largest online community for socially engaged youth – TIGweb.org. GYAN’s mission is to facilitate youth participation and intergenerational partnership in global decision-making; to support collaboration among diverse youth organizations; and to provide tools, resources, and recognition for positive youth action.

We are currently looking for a new generation of young, passionate, and committed volunteers to join the GYAN team and help us take this network to the next level. In a recent speech, Van Jones (President Obama’s new Special Advisor on Green Jobs) told a room full of over 10,000 students, "Your generation was born to change the whole system." We agree with him. As our generation faces an unprecedented convergence of challenges - fixing the economic crisis, stopping climate change, eradicating poverty, creating sustainable development, and many more – we recognize that we must come together to find the solutions that are being called for. GYAN believes that if we unite together as a generation we can create the change we want to see in this world.

To achieve this ambitious goal, we are currently seeking volunteers to fill the following roles and responsibilities: Member Engagement Coordinator, Network Outreach Coordinator, UN Liaison, Newsletter Editor, Blog Manager, New Media Coordinator.

Why volunteer with GYAN?
  • This is a great opportunity for you to connect with inspiring youth and youth organizations from around all corners of the world.
  • As part of a fun and dynamic team of young leaders who share a passion for creating change, you will grow your personal network of friends.
  • GYAN and TIG have a strong international reputation within the non-profit sector and UN system, and our reputation is growing. Experience at GYAN/TIG will be respected by future employers, and through the collaborative nature of our work, you have the chance to grow a solid professional network that might help you in your career.
Global Youth Movement Blog Manager
GYAN seeks a motivated young person to join our volunteer team in the position of Blog Manager. If you are passionate about youth engagement, the power of online journalism, and interacting with young people from various different backgrounds, this could be the experience you were always waiting for! The position will offer you an unprecedented opportunity to gain leadership experience in project development, project management, and editing.

Since the Global Youth Movement Blog is an entirely new project of GYAN, the position of Blog Manager offers the unique opportunity to see a new idea come to live and be one of the key people to influence the blog’s branding, design and promotion strategy. The blog will share insight on research, resources, opportunities and trends on global youth activism. As Blog Manager you will work closely with the Executive Director of GYAN and be responsible for the successful launch of the blog, which will include the following key tasks:
  • Consult with youth activists to develop a sticky name and branding for the blog
  • Work with the tech development of TakingITGlobal to design and launch the blog
  • Research and develop guidelines for the team of editors and contributors
  • Reach out to bloggers in the global youth movement and recruit an initial team of dedicated editors and contributors
  • Develop and implement an outreach strategy to promote the blog
  • Maintain communication with the global team of editors and contributors and assist with editing and technical issues

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an individual with genuine passion and interest in our mission, who is willing to commit at least 5-10 hours per week to the organization for a prolonged period of time (1 year or longer). If you are looking for a short-term position to add to your resume, this is not the right position for you. For the right person, this position offers an incredible opportunity to contribute to the growth of an emerging network, and collaborate with young people from all over the world.

Ideally, you would already bring the following skills with you:
  • A passion for blogging and online journalism
  • Loads of creativity, and the ability to take initiative and multitask
  • Excellent written communication skills with proficient English grammar, spelling and punctuation (we will love you for speaking additional languages, especially Spanish and French!)
  • Strong curiosity for and knowledge of international development issues, with particular interests in youth engagement
How to apply?
As a global network, we are inviting volunteers from anywhere in the world to apply. However, priority will initially be given to applicants from the New York-Washington, DC-Toronto region. Most of the communication among team members will take place online, but meetings of the volunteer team will initially happen primarily in New York City. If you are interested in the position of Global Youth Movement Blog Manager, please send an e-mail to our team at gyan@takingitglobal.org describing your skill sets (submit a resume or CV if possible) and why you are interested in this position.
