About About

The Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) is one of the most expansive youth networks in the world, with more than 1,000 member organizations in over 150 countries. Our strategic partner TakingITGlobal (TIG) hosts the world’s largest online community for socially engaged youth – TIGweb.org. GYAN’s mission is to facilitate youth participation and intergenerational partnership in global decision-making; to support collaboration among diverse youth organizations; and to provide tools, resources, and recognition for positive youth action.

We are currently looking for a new generation of young, passionate, and committed volunteers to join the GYAN team and help us take this network to the next level. In a recent speech, Van Jones (President Obama’s new Special Advisor on Green Jobs) told a room full of over 10,000 students, "Your generation was born to change the whole system." We agree with him. As our generation faces an unprecedented convergence of challenges - fixing the economic crisis, stopping climate change, eradicating poverty, creating sustainable development, and many more – we recognize that we must come together to find the solutions that are being called for. GYAN believes that if we unite together as a generation we can create the change we want to see in this world.

To achieve this ambitious goal, we are currently seeking volunteers to fill the following roles and responsibilities: Member Engagement Coordinator, Network Outreach Coordinator, UN Liaison, Newsletter Editor, Blog Manager, New Media Coordinator.

Why volunteer with GYAN?
  • This is a great opportunity for you to connect with inspiring youth and youth organizations from around all corners of the world.
  • As part of a fun and dynamic team of young leaders who share a passion for creating change, you will grow your personal network of friends.
  • GYAN and TIG have a strong international reputation within the non-profit sector and UN system, and our reputation is growing. Experience at GYAN/TIG will be respected by future employers, and through the collaborative nature of our work, you have the chance to grow a solid professional network that might help you in your career.
United Nations Liaison
GYAN seeks a motivated young person to join our volunteer team in the position of UN Liaison. If you are passionate about youth engagement, blogging, international policy, and the work of the United Nations, this could be the experience you were always waiting for! The position will offer you a unique opportunity to learn the ins-in-outs of the UN system, observe decision-making processes at one of the world’s most influential institutions, hone your written communication skills and deepen your knowledge of international development issues.

As UN Liaison you will be responsible for monitoring and attending events at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and blog about your experiences and policy progress made at the UN through GYAN’s online blog. We encourage you to focus on an issue of your interest and follow policy discussions throughout the year, with a focus on their impact on young people. As UN Liaison you will also work closely with other volunteers to ensure GYAN members have an opportunity to contribute to policy processes and events at the United Nations.

Your tasks would include:
  • Monitor and attend events, meetings and conferences at the UN Headquarters and provide succinct summaries and reports to our global blog
  • Keep up-to-date on an international development issue of your choice and research its impact on young people around the world
  • Keep GYAN members informed about emerging participation opportunities at the UN
  • Provide logistical and accreditation assistance to GYAN members and other young people attending events at the UN
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an individual with genuine passion and interest in our mission, who is willing to commit at least 5-10 hours per week to the organization for a prolonged period of time (1 year or longer). If you are looking for a short-term position to add to your resume, this is not the right position for you. For the right person, this position offers an incredible opportunity to contribute to the growth of an emerging network, and collaborate with young people from all over the world.

Ideally, you would already bring the following skills with you:
  • Excellent written communication skills with proficient English grammar, spelling and punctuation (we will love you for speaking additional languages, especially Spanish and French!)
  • Strong curiosity for and knowledge of international development issues, with particular interests in youth engagement
  • A passion for blogging/writing
How to apply?
As a global network, we are inviting volunteers from anywhere in the world to apply. However, priority will initially be given to applicants from the New York-Washington, DC-Toronto region. Most of the communication among team members will take place online, but meetings of the volunteer team will initially happen primarily in New York City. If you are interested in this position, please send an e-mail to our team at gyan@takingitglobal.org describing your skill sets (submit a resume or CV if possible) and why you are interested in this position.
