The Global Issues Team will work alongside TakingITGlobal (TIG) staff in the development of our global issues pages (http://www.tigweb.org/understand/issues/). TakingITGlobal is a social network for social change which inspires, informs and involves our global community to empower youth to take meaningful action in their local communities. We currently offer:
• Engagement across 12 languages, and in every country and territory in the world
• “Thought leadership” through presenting at over 500 education, technology, development, business, and youth conferences and events
• Partnerships across sectors with over 8 U.N. agencies, dozens of international civil society organizations, several top-tier technology companies (Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, HP), and leading-edge foundations across North America
• Global recognition from the World Economic Forum and Tech Museum of Innovation
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Gathering scholar-worthy* resources to be posted and featured on the Global Issues Pages
• Writing a “Guide-to-Action” article for a global issue to be published on TIG
• Establishing and leveraging community partnerships with like-minded organizations
• Developing strategic campaigns to raise awareness and involvement with global issues
*Scholar-worthy refers to information that you could use in an academic paper but that has not necessarily been peer-reviewed by other academics in the field.
Qualifications/Skills Required:
• Strong written communication and presentation skills,
• Natural curiosity and interest in using Internet technology for social change
• Ability to multi-task and collaborate with others online
• Interest in at least one Global Issue
• Self-motivated and independent workers with reliable access to the Internet
Additional Valued Skills:
• Bilingual or multilingual an asset
• Previous participation in youth or student organizations, or other volunteer roles
• Experience with the media, including with online publishing and communities.
• Strong curiosity for and knowledge of current affairs, international issues, human rights and development, with particular interests in youth engagement and information and communications technologies
• Ability to work in collaborative teams – particularly in a virtual context
• Sense of humor and diplomacy
• Formal education or relevant experience is considered an asset
Global Issues Team Structure
The Global Issues Internship Program has 3 levels of participation.
Researcher: This position entails editing Global Issues pages to ensure the most up-to-date and relevant content is posted. Time commitment = 5 hours/week
Journalist: In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, this position involves the opportunity to write a “Guide-to-Action” article about a global issue which is to be published on a Global Issue page. Campaigner: In this position, Interns will develop, lead, and execute a campaign around their global issue. Campaigners will have the unique opportunity of reaching out to their community both offline and online with the help of partner organizations and the rest of the Global Issues team. Time commitment = 15 hours/week
Application Process:
This unpaid internship is offered based on the following terms:
Summer Term: June 3, 2009 to August 26, 2009
Autumn Term: September 2, 2009 to November 25, 2009
