We place volunteers in different communities to provide public health services to rural children, youth and adults. Volunteers work alongside Ugandan counselors and are engaged in a combination of the following activities:
Public speaking and mentoring in rural communities respecting HIV prevention and AIDS care, malaria, hygiene, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition, early childhood feeding, and sanitation. This is the most important and most common volunteer activity. Volunteers travel to a variety of villages to do this work. They design their own seminars based on pre-determined subject matter. Basic training and educational materials are provided by the host organization.
Volunteers with medical background take part in clinic duty, treating and immunizing local people. There is also work available at a training centre for nurse aids. Volunteers teach nursing skills to adult students and help with curriculum development and lesson planning. Volunteers are needed for their skills as health centres are underfunded and lack qualified staff.
Volunteers take part in a flexible schedule, which includes some or all activities offered by the program. The exchange of ideas, experiences, and culture is encouraged. This project requires walking long distances in the sun.
Volunteers are given a private room and meals at the headquarters of the host organization. Electricity is intermittent and there is no running water.
