TIGed Resource Translators

Reporting to the Manager of Education Programs, the TIGed Translators will support the expansion of English TIGed content and resources into Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Romanian, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese, Swahili, and Swedish in order to better serve the global TIGed community.

Position: TIGed Resource Translators
Position Location: Toronto
Start Date: September 11, 2012
Details: Minimum of 5 hours per week
Duration: 6 months, with the possibility of renewal

This part-time volunteer opportunity is perfect for a student or recent graduate in the field of education, international development, or other field related to work in the non-profit sector. Our ideal candidate is passionate about employing technology to support youth participation in global, action-oriented learning, and has strong writing, editing and communication skills. About TIGed
Established in 2006, TakingITGlobal’s program for educators, TIGed, offers a community of over 4,000 globally minded educators in over 115 countries worldwide, a growing database of global education resources, a virtual classroom platform that allows for the use of social media tools in a secure environment, and professional development e-courses related to global education and project-based learning. By enhancing global citizenship while improving technology and media literacy skills, TIGed is bringing the world to students and preparing students for an increasingly globalized future.

Roles and Responsibilities

Using TIG’s online translation tool, translate TIGed educational resources and site content from English into one or more of the following languages:
Spanish
French
Italian
Dutch
Portuguese
Russian
Romanian
Turkish
Arabic
Chinese
Swahili
Swedish
Participate in language team meetings on a monthly basis
Maintain ongoing communications with the Director of Education Programs, Language Coordinator, and Multilingual Programs Manager
Submit monthly reports

Keep staff updated by posting to "My Week" every Friday and maintain regular communication with the Director and HR manager
Share interesting education related articles, news items, and resources with the team
Add relevant bookmarks to the TIGed del.icio.us account utilizing the established tagging system
Contribute to the TIGed twitter account
Prepare a brief handover note

Required Qualifications

Full fluency in English as well as the language of translation (excellent writing skills and spoken fluency). Fluency means a high level of both writing and speaking (mother-tongue speakers are preferred).
Ability to work in a collaborative and virtual context
Interest or background in current affairs, the environment, international issues or human rights, with particular interest in youth engagement and information and communications technologies

Goal oriented and able to work with minimal supervision
Attention to detail
Strong writing skills
Effective time management and organizational skills

Asset Qualifications
Previous translation experience
Experience living and working in a country in which the language of translation is spoken.
